“Apparently, he wants to become more successful before returning to meet the love of his life.”
Caroline felt her heart skip a beat. Hastily, she looked out the window. “I–is that so?”
“Caroline.” Quentin sounded serious all of a sudden.
“If you’re the one he’s after, what would you tell him?”
“I…” Caroline pressed her fingers to her temple and fell silent.
A moment later, she sighed and said, “I’ll probably tell him to lead a good life alone and that he
shouldn’t sacrifice anything for anyone at all.”
On the other end of the line, Quentin froze.
Laughing it off, he said under his breath, “I think I know why he likes you now.”
“What?” Caroline asked. She hadn’t heard him clearly.
“It’s nothing. I’ll do what you asked me to.” After that, he ended the call.
With her phone in hand, Caroline felt a pang of guilt wash over her.
So she had guessed it right even when they had been in Macovo. She knew that Adrian had
intentionally wanted her to see Kirk shoving him.
She had never been good at solving relationship problems. So she had pretended as if she were
clueless about it all this time.

The world spun before her eyes, and before she knew it, she was already lying on the bed.
The bed was narrow, and her back was pressed against his chest. She could feel his heartbeat and
her own as well. It was as though their hearts were connected, and it made her heart race.
Embarrassed, she struggled to sit up on the bed. “Kirk—”
Kirk hissed in pain, making Caroline freeze on the spot.
“Is it your wound?” She asked, worried that she had hurt him.
He wrapped his arms around her with a smile playing on his lips. “Yes,” he mumbled, trying to
sound upset.
His answer made her stop struggling, and she let him hug her. “Does it still hurt?”
“Yes.” Kirk rested his chin on her shoulder and pressed his lips against her neck.
“Darling, let me hug you while I sleep, will you?”
Caroline wanted to refuse, but she couldn’t find it in her to do so because of how pitiful he
sounded. Saying “no” right now would be akin to torturing a poor little animal.
Chapter 482
When Caroline woke up the next day, she found that there were several missed calls from Gavin.
Surprised that she had slept so fitfully through his calls, she hastily patted her cheeks in an
attempt to make sure that she was fully awake.
Her movements roused Kirk. One of his legs was pressed stubbornly against her body, and he
mumbled, “Darling, it’s still early. Let’s sleep for a little longer…
“I have to call someone back.”
“It can wait,” Kirk muttered into her back.
After trying hard to recompose herself, she told him. “No. I have to make the call now.”
Gavin had called her multiple times. It could only mean that something had happened.
Kirk’s eyelids fluttered open. Eventually, he relented when he saw the determined expression on
her face. “Fine,” he said.
Her expression made her seem as though she was a scumbag who wanted to shirk all
responsibilities after a one–night stand.
Shaking off all the messy thoughts in her mind, Caroline picked up her phone and left the room.
A breeze blew when she got to the corridor, the cold helping to make sure that she was wide
awake.
She dialed Gavin’s number and took a breath to calm down before he answered the call.
Soon, Gavin’s anxious voice sounded from the phone. “You finally answered your phone!”
“What happened?”
“Dan came to see me yesterday and asked me to drop the lawsuit.” Gavin pressed his fingers
against his temples.
“He said that if I don’t do it, he’ll ask Eddy to impose a sanction on our company.”
“I didn’t think too much of it at first, but he mentioned Layla …”
Gavin continued, “I was so worried that I couldn’t sleep last night. So I called you to discuss our
next step.”

Now, it was Caroline’s turn to massage her temples. She fell silent for a moment before asking him, “Is Eddy up to something?”
“Not for now.”

Caroline leaned against the wall as her thoughts wandered to Eddy. He seemed to be able to tolerate almost anything and everything when it came to Layla.
He hadn’t been mad at Layla when her company went bankrupt. Instead, he had helped her settle
the problem regarding her funds and even had the best PR team in Easton to help her with it.
Therefore, Layla hadn’t suffered much loss, although she might have humiliated herself and lost
quite a sum of money.
In fact, knowing her, she probably would have seized this chance to act all poor and pitiful in front
of Eddy.
Caroline couldn’t get why he tolerated her so much.

In the villa in the suburbs, Layla stared at Dan and Sarah, who sat before her.

“Caroline managed the company really well, so everyone’s fawning over her. I can tell you now
that you can’t climb back to your positions anymore.”
Layla continued, “This is all your fault. If you hadn’t embezzled funds, the Harpers wouldn’t have
been able to sue you.”
Sarah was so furious that she started trembling. “You weren’t like this before! You said that you
would treat us as if we were your parents! How could you treat us like this?”

Dan sat on the couch and said, “I’m sure you know that Evans Group is a family business. The CEO
has to be a person from our family.
“I know that.”
“So what if the current CEO doesn’t share our blood?” Dan spoke clearly and slowly.
Sarah’s expression shifted when she heard what he said. She nudged him to remind him of the
gravity of the matter, yet he continued staring right into Layla’s eyes.
Layla straightened her back, her eyes wide open in disbelief.
A moment later, she shook her head. “That’s impossible. You’re lying, right?”
“No, I’m not lying to you. Caroline isn’t my daughter. I picked her up somewhere outside.”
Layla still couldn’t believe her ears. “Where’s the real Caroline then?”
“She’s long gone.” A sliver of agony flashed through Dan’s eyes.

Layla finally calmed down after taking a few deep breaths. “Dan, don’t you think that you’re
asking for a bit too much?”
“A secret like this in exchange for something that once belonged to me is fair enough, don’t you
think?”
Dan glanced at Sarah and continued, “Besides, do you think Jude would still insist on Eddy
marrying Caroline once he finds out that she isn’t my daughter?”
That was the best Layla could ever hope for.
She pressed her fingers against her temple as if to think about Dan’s offer. A moment later, she
said, “Okay then. It’s a deal.”
“I’ll go and get the documents ready so I can prove to the board that she isn’t my biological
daughter.”

“Caroline thinks that she’s really good at doing business. Let her handle Evans Group for a while

Caroline wasn’t the kind of person who would easily bend to another’s will. Kirk might have an

A ghost of a smile hung on Kirk’s lips as he stared at her, watching her work.
It had been long since he experienced a day as wonderful as this, and he found himself thinking that the hospital wasn’t that horrible anymore.
Just then, a doctor came in to check on him. “Mr. and Mrs. Morrison,” he greeted them as he
entered the room.
Both Caroline and Kirk had left a lasting impression on him. To be precise, they had left a lasting impression on everyone here in the hospital.
Caroline and Kirk looked like a lovey–dovey couple, but when asked if they were husband and wife, Caroline would always deny it. Apparently, they had gotten into a fight and weren’t on good
terms.
Still, it was kind of embarrassing for her since her actions told the truth.
Although she wouldn’t admit that Kirk was her husband, the hospital staff always found signs of
her looking after Kirk in the room.
For example, she had bought him a cushion so that he could sleep more comfortably at night.
Besides that, there were fresh fruits on the table and flowers in the vase all the time. The staff
could always catch a waft of the aroma of Caroline’s cooking from Kirk’s room too.

The doctor was flabbergasted. Kirk was probably the only person who wished to prolong his stay
at the hospital.
“Is something the matter?” Caroline asked, concerned.
“It’s just a check–up. I just want to make sure that there aren’t any internal injuries.”
Caroline glanced at Kirk with eyes full of worry. The doctor felt the urge to tell her that nothing
was wrong. Kirk had fully recovered and was as fit as ever.
However, he could feel Kirk’s piercing gaze on him. So he said, “Don’t worry. Just look after him
and be more considerate toward him. Make sure that he doesn’t get emotional. It’ll help with his
recovery.”
After finishing his sentence, he sensed that Kirk’s gaze wasn’t as terrifying anymore.
Caroline also felt very relieved after hearing what he said. “Thank you.”
The doctor picked up the patient file and left without even sparing Kirk a glance.
After seeing the doctor off, Caroline walked back to sit beside the bed again.
Just as she started flipping through the documents again, Kirk’s husky voice sounded from beside
her. “Darling, you heard what the doctor said, right?”

After some time, she still couldn’t recall anything that made her happy, so she gave up. “Let me
watch a funny video.” Perhaps she could smile after watching something funny.
Kirk nodded, and she unlocked her phone to scroll through tonnes of funny video clips.
Usually, she would laugh her head off watching these. But they had somehow lost their magic
today, and she couldn’t make herself laugh at them.
Seeing the scowl on her face, Kirk couldn’t help but feel his heart throb.
She couldn’t even smile with him around. It showed just how much she was disappointed in him.
He couldn’t imagine how devastated she would be if she discovered that he and Eddy were related.

Sonia panicked when she heard that.
“Let me leave with you then,” Sonia said. She hadn’t taken off her mask, so Caroline couldn’t see the blush creeping up her cheeks.
Caroline assumed that Sonia thought Kirk would be difficult to get along with. So she dragged Sonia out of the room and whispered to her, “Don’t worry. He’s easy to get along with.”
Sonia was at a loss for words.

Chapter 487
Caroline left, leaving Sonia and Kirk alone in the room. An awkward silence hung in the air as they both kept quiet.
Sonia sat by the bed and stared at Kirk, who was resting with his eyes closed. She heaved a sigh of relief.
To be honest, he was pretty good–looking, yet especially hard to get along with. His dominating air was too much to handle, and he always gave others a sense of sternness and rigidity.
She wondered how Caroline had been able to bear with him for such a long time.
Sonia tapped her nose and took out her phone to read her script, ignoring Kirk. It didn’t seem like he was going to strike up a conversation with her anyway.
She had received the script just yesterday. It was the work of an infamous playwright called Marietta Weiss.
Marietta had come to Easton this time in search of an actress for the female protagonist in her latest work, “Daughter of the Sea“.
It told the story of an Eastonian woman who had found her true love after traveling abroad. This character was a pretty lady who had learned to fight in the past and showed strength of character.
One of the producers thought that Sonia was a good fit for the role and had handed her the script. Her recent popularity had probably contributed to it too.
She had fallen in love with the story when she first set eyes on it. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the female protagonist in “Daughter of the Sea” was tailor–made for her.
Both Sonia and the female protagonist were orphans who had learned how to fight for self-
defense. Both of them worked hard in the city, too.
The only difference was that the character in the story met her true love abroad, whereas Sonia
met Caroline, who had given her a chance to shine in the entertainment field.
The many similarities between Sonia and the character made her even more determined to take
up the role. She was well aware that lots of actresses were after the role as well. It was Marietta
Weiss‘ work, after all.

It took every ounce of her strength to stare at the picture on the screen.
She then collapsed on the chair with a loud thump. The person in the picture was none other than Daphne!
Meanwhile, in the hospital, Sonia noticed that Kirk had started becoming restless. She had been busy with the script, yet she couldn’t help but raise her head to look at what he was trying to do.
Kirk had his phone in his hand. He raised it to look at the screen and put it down the next instant.
He repeated this movement several times.
Finally, Sonia couldn’t stand it anymore. “What are you looking at?” she asked.
Kirk raised his eyes to look at her briefly with an almost unnoticeable smile. He then looked back

Sonia glanced at Kirk’s phone’s screen. His wallpaper was Caroline.
She couldn’t help but sigh. So this was what it meant when people said that it was impossible to hide it when you love someone. Every little detail of what you do would reflect your love for the person.
“Why are you staring at your phone all the time? Is something wrong?”
Kirk straightened his back and told her, “It’s been almost an hour.”
“So?”
“She would usually be back by now.”
Sonia followed his gaze to look at the room’s door and abruptly understood what he meant by that. She laughed. “You’re too clingy! Caroline’s only gone for an hour.”
Kirk then stared at her coolly. She lowered her eyes to stare at her phone in an attempt to avoid his gaze. She cleared her throat and said, “It’s been quite a while. Let me call her for you.”
Kirk pursed his lips and said nothing, but from the vague smile on his lips, Sonia knew that he was in a better mood now.
He was truly a pretentious fellow. He wanted to know Caroline’s whereabouts but made it so that Sonia would be the one to make the call.
With her phone in hand, Sonia walked toward the windows to call Caroline.
Strangely, though, her call went unanswered. Frowning, she called Caroline a second time, but the same thing happened again.
Her frown deepened as she started to worry.
Just then, she heard Kirk’s anxious voice from behind her. “What’s wrong?”
She told him frankly that Caroline didn’t answer her phone. Next, Kirk picked up his phone to call Caroline, but the line was immediately cut off.
When he called her again, the call didn’t go through anymore.
He got off the bed, slipped into his shoes, and walked out of the room, with Sonia following closely

Instead of replying, Kirk simply carried on walking. His lips were pursed, and his expression was as gloomy as an overcast sky.
Hastily, Sonia put on her mask and sunglasses, then followed him downstairs.

Sonia regretted getting into the car. Kirk was driving so recklessly that she thought they would both meet their ends on the road. It was as though he was in a race.
She clutched at the back of the seat so that she wouldn’t fly through the windscreen.
“Kirk! You’re going too fast!” Although she had gone through the hardship of practicing martial arts, being thrashed about like this made her so nauseous she thought she would throw up.
Despite her plea, Kirk acted as if he didn’t hear her. His grip on the steering wheel tightened, and his eyes were bloodshot.
Sonia couldn’t understand why he was reacting like this. Caroline just hadn’t answered their calls.
It wasn’t a big deal.
Fortunately, they arrived at Caroline’s apartment unscathed. It was probably because the other drivers and pedestrians on the roads had seen how they were speeding and avoided them.
Sonia took some time to calm down before getting out of the car. Kirk had already entered the
apartment when she stepped out of the car, so she hurried after him.
Alas, she was a bit too late. The elevator Kirk had taken had already reached Caroline’s floor.

Chapter 489
When Sonia arrived at Caroline’s floor, she realized that Kirk was responsible for the loud bang she had just heard. He had kicked open the door to Caroline’s apartment.
Sonia stared with wide eyes as Kirk walked in the direction of the bedroom. He raised his hand to knock at the door and said, “Darling!”
His tone was very different from what she had heard all this time. It was soft, and his voice was gentle.
Just then, she heard Caroline roar from the other side of the door. “Get lost! I don’t want to see you!”
Sonia was stunned at her words. She didn’t know what had happened between Kirk and Caroline. They had seemed to be on good terms just now. So what had happened?
Sonia then turned to look at Kirk, who rested his forehead against the bedroom door.
He was as patient as he could be as he tried talking to Caroline. “What happened? Can you please tell me what happened?”
However, no sound came from the bedroom. Kirk was about to use brute force to kick down the door when Sonia rushed forward to stop him.
“Do you really think Caroline would talk to you if you barged into her room like this? You would only make things worse.”
Although she and Caroline had met each other recently, her instincts told her that Kirk was the last person Caroline wanted to see right now. Caroline would feel even more annoyed if he forced his way into her room.
Kirk’s heart beat wildly in his chest as he stared at Sonia.
Seeing his bloodshot eyes, she felt her heart leap into her throat. Still, she pushed away her fear.
“I know you’re anxious, but some things just can’t be rushed. I’m sure you don’t want to make
things worse between you two.”
Her last sentence made him calm down a bit, and he asked gruffly, “What should I do then?”
“Return to the hospital. I’ll take care of Caroline for now, and I’ll update you about her condition
later on, alright?”

The scowl on Kirk’s gloomy face deepened as he stared at the bedroom door. Eventually, he nodded his head, albeit unwillingly.
He and Sonia exchanged numbers before she saw him off. She then closed the door of Caroline’s apartment and headed in.
On her way to the bedroom, she noticed that the kitchen was in a mess. She briefly raised her eyes to look at the bedroom door before turning into the kitchen to tidy up the mess.
After preparing some pasta, she knocked on the bedroom door and said, “Caroline, it’s Sonia here. Kirk’s gone. Can you open the door now?”
Caroline stiffened when she heard Sonia’s voice. Her grip on the blankets tightened as she stared at the bedroom door.
She had felt like her entire world had collapsed when she had found out that Daphne was Kirk’s wife.
Initially, she had told herself that maybe Daphne and the woman Kirk was married to shared the
same name.
However, the delusion had shattered when she saw the picture. She recognized that face. There was no doubt that it was Daphne!
However, Daphne was Eddy’s second uncle’s wife. How was she married to Kirk, then? Unless ..
Caroline looked up at the ceiling as a thought struck her. Kirk was Eddy’s second uncle!
If that was the case…
She cracked a bitter smile as she thought of how pathetic her life had been all along.
First, she had been cheated on by the cousin, and now the second uncle had fooled her.
“Caroline?” Sonia said.
After receiving no reply and failing to hear any movement inside, she started to panic. “Can you
open the door? Kirk’s gone already.”
Caroline sniffed, got off the bed, and opened the door.
Sonia could finally heave a sigh of relief. However, her happiness was short–lived, for her heart
hrobbed when she saw how pale and downcast Caroline looked.

“Are you okay?” Sonia asked.

“Why don’t you eat this?” Sonia placed the plate of pasta on the bedside table.
Caroline shook her head, to which Sonia said, “You can’t refuse this. Your body is a precious gift from God. You must eat, even if the world falls apart.”
Then, Caroline turned to look at her with dull and spiritless eyes. Her lips parted, but no words came out.
Sonia knelt on the carpeted floor and glanced up at Caroline. “Can you tell me what happened?”
The corners of Caroline’s lips twitched, but her attempt at a smile failed.
Sonia gripped her hands and said, “It’s okay. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, and you don’t have to eat this if you don’t feel like it. I’ll stay here with you. Just tell me what you want, alright?”
Eventually, Caroline nodded. Feeling much relieved, Sonia stood up and walked to the side of the bed to draw the curtains.
The darkness was rather welcoming, and it gave Caroline a sense of security. She curled up in her blankets and closed her eyes, letting her tears flow.
Sonia watched from the side. She suddenly remembered how Kirk had sped all the way here, and she took out her phone to message him. “Caroline’s let me into the room. Don’t worry. -Sonia”
After that, she pondered for a moment before sending him another message.
“I don’t know what happened between you two, but Caroline once told me that you’re having an affair with another woman. I think she’s become like this because of it.
“I haven’t known you two for long, but I can see that you truly like her. Since you like her so much, can’t you settle things with the other woman?
“I know that I shouldn’t meddle in your business, but Caroline helped me before this, so I don’t
want to see her suffer.”
Kirk read the message line by line, his gaze as cold as ice. It was as though a blade had stabbed
right through his heart when he reached the words “Caroline” and “suffer“.
He punched the steering wheel hard. Somehow, the thing that hurt wasn’t his hand but his heart.

A shadow fell across his face as he dialed Charles‘ number. “I’m giving you a week to find out who that mysterious person and Dolly are! This is your final chance!”
Despite the distance between them, Charles could feel the murderous edge in Kirk’s voice. He straightened his back and said, “Sir-”

Charles inhaled sharply. He hadn’t even said anything!
“Three!”
“Five days it is!” Charles said.
“Don’t worry. I’ll give you every bit of information about them in five days!” He hung up before Kirk could end the call and realized how he had broken out in a cold sweat during the call.
Charles wore a stern expression as he walked into the computer lab. With one hand raised in the air, he said, “Everybody, freeze.”
Everyone in the room looked at him. Noticing the serious look on his face, they didn’t dare to utter a single word.
Charles then said, “Find out who Dolly and that mysterious person are. You have four days‘ time.”
Everyone held their breath. They were in so much distress that they didn’t have any energy to even wail at the news.
Charles started to leave when he was finished talking, and the person in charge rushed after him. “‘
Charles, hold on.”
Charles stopped and waited for the barrage of questions that was bound to follow.
“Can I ask you something? About the deal related to Dolly and that mysterious person… How
many zeros are involved in it? Why do we have to look into this matter so urgently?
“We’ve been on it for a long time, and we’ve spent way too many resources already.”
He added, “If this continues, it could only mean that this deal is worth hundreds of billions.”
In answer to these, Charles simply stared at the man and said, “To Mr. Morrison, it’s priceless.”
