When it was almost afternoon, Caroline’s expression finally eased a little. However, she still didn’t have much of an appetite and refused to eat anything.
Sonia was really afraid that Caroline would lose herself if she went on like this.
However, when she saw that Caroline could still answer a call from Cheryl and give clear and logical suggestions, Sonia knew that she was someone who would never be defeated.
Besides, when she worked, Caroline was like a whole other person. She was driven and energetic.
No one could even tell that her heart was in agony.
Yet, once Caroline put down her phone, it was like all the energy had been drained from her. She collapsed into bed weakly.
Seeing this, Sonia suddenly got an idea. She took out her script and showed it to Caroline.
As expected, Caroline transformed into another person when she held the script. She concentrated on it wholeheartedly, immersing herself in the world within the script.
Sonia didn’t disturb Caroline when she saw her so focused. Instead, she snuck into the living room to send her manager a message.
Helena called immediately. “Thank God you finally texted me back.
“Where are you now? Hurry back to the company.”
“Is something going on?”
“The company is planning to let you take on a new script. They want you to film a similar show so
you can ride the wave of success from the webseries.”
Sonia frowned. “Helena, didn’t I tell you before? I won’t film anything that’s similar to something
I’ve acted in before. It will limit the kind of characters I get to play.”
Helena replied, “Sonia, I know what you’re thinking. You want to secure the lead female role for
Marietta Weiss‘ play, ‘Daughter of the Sea‘. But I’m telling you now to give up on it.”
“Why?” Sonia felt very displeased to have her capabilities ignored.
“I used to be in theater. I can handle being in a play.”

“Sonia, I’m your manager. How could I not know that you used to be in theater? But I just got the news,” Helena said a little impatiently.
“Daphne Dawson is interested in this role.”
“How … could she be interested in this role?” Sonia was perplexed.
Daphne had always been in TV shows and wasn’t suited to act in a play. If she acted in one, the character would be ruined by her performance.
At the thought of such a well–rounded character being ruined, Sonia felt her heart ache.
Helena answered, “How else? Although she managed to push all the blame on the Evanson Corporation’s boss after her stint as their ambassador, people still found out she couldn’t act.
“Lots of people are unhappy with her. Plus, she’s the wife of Mr. Eddy’s second uncle. No one will be pleased if she doesn’t have something to her name.
“That’s why I think she wants to get the leading role in Marietta Weiss‘ ‘Daughter of the Sea‘. This way, she’ll have proof that Ms. Weiss acknowledges her talents.
“Her husband invested in this play, so the role is hers without question. There’s no reason to try, Sonia. It’s a waste of time.”
Sonia was happy when she ended the phone call. Upset, she went back to the bedroom.
Caroline had just finished reading the script. She looked up to find a disappointed–looking Sonia. What’s wrong?”
At being found out, Sonia felt her throat turn scratchy. She said weakly, “Nothing.”
She forced a smile as she looked at Caroline. “Caroline, do you think the script is good?”
Although Caroline wasn’t a professional critic, she had been brought up well by the Evans family.
Thus, she had a well–rounded education and was very well–read. She was sure that she could
make a few comments.
“I think this script is pretty good. But there’s some emotional bits that weren’t handled very well.”
Sonia’s eyes widened as she looked at Caroline. “C–Caroline, do you know who wrote this?”
Caroline asked, “Who?”

“Marietta Weiss.”

Caroline was familiar with this name. After all, Marietta was currently the most renowned playwright. Additionally, she had pretty much read all of Marietta’s books.
Chapter 492
“Did Marietta really write this?” Caroline asked.
“It doesn’t seem to be her style.”
Marietta’s works were known for their sharp satire and harsh criticism. In contrast, this book was warm and tender. It was completely unlike her usual work.
“Yes. Plus, she’s coming to Easton to find a leading female. But …”
At that point, Caroline could see the deep disappointment in Sonia’s eyes, no matter how hard the latter tried to hide it.
“I think there’s no need for an audition. Once she gets here, everything will be set in stone.”
Caroline sat up from bed. She hadn’t eaten anything all day, so she felt unsteady.
But now that she had finished some work and managed to distract herself, the burning rage within her had simmered a bit lower.
She forced herself to focus all of her attention on Sonia. “Why is that?” she asked.
“Because… Because it’s been rigged.”
When she saw Caroline sit up, she said, “Caroline, you must be hungry. I’ll cook you something to eat.”
But Caroline stopped her. “Don’t worry about that. Who’s getting the role?”
“Daphne Dawson.”
At that answer, Caroline’s face became visibly paler. Just as Sonia was about to ask her what was
wrong, Caroline pushed past her and rushed into the bathroom.
Inside, Caroline couldn’t hold back the waves of nausea and started puking. Since she hadn’t eaten
all day, nothing came out. Yet, her stomach kept churning.
After she vomited for a while, the feeling of nausea finally subsided.
Holding onto the toilet bowl, Caroline looked up to find Sonia looking at her worriedly. She forced
herself to comfort Sonia, saying, “I’m fine.”

Sonia was concerned. “Caroline, I think you…
Caroline got up by supporting herself on the toilet. Her legs went weak, and she nearly slipped.
Luckily, Scia reacted quickly enough to catch her.
“Caroline.”
Caroline gave her a pained smile. “I’m hungry.”
Finally, Sonia felt somewhat at ease after hearing that. She helped Caroline back to the bed and sat her down. “I’ll cook you something.”
Caroline nodded shallowly. Once Sonia left, she took out her phone. Holding back the nausea, she typed in Daphne’s name.
The first result was still the news about Daphne being Eddy’s second uncle’s wife.
She frowned. Ignoring the buzzing in her head, Caroline kept scrolling through the news.
Soon, she found in the latest news an article that mentioned both Daphne and “Daughter of the Sea
The article mostly talked about how Daphne was the best choice to be the star of the show.
Caroline clicked on Twitter. There, both “Daughter of the Sea” and Daphne were already trending.
The posts involved were mostly praise.
“So I’m not the only one who thinks Daphne Dawson would be the best choice to be the female
lead of ‘Daughter of the Sea“!”
“Daph can really do it. For those who don’t know, Daph is amazing at Sarcozian and has learned
martial arts. She’s a perfect match for the character!”
“I don’t know much about Daphne, but after reading about her, I really think she fits the vibe for
the main character of ‘Daughter of the Sea‘.
“She’s also someone who worked hard to succeed and found a suitable partner for herself. I think
the role was made for her!”
Chapter 493
“Caroline,” came Sonia’s voice. She had come back with some food.
“I made it a bit bland, so I’m not sure if you’ll find it okay.”
Caroline had a few mouthfuls and praised, “It’s very good.”
“Really?” Sonia was overjoyed, her face lighting up.
“If you like it, there’s more.”
Caroline looked at Sonia without saying anything.
Sonia found this weird and asked in curiosity, “What is it, Caroline?”
Caroline asked her something back. “Do you remember the promise I made you?”
Sonia thought back on it for a little while before saying hesitantly, “Are you talking about when you said you would help me become an internationally famous actress?”
“Yes.” Caroline straightened.
She looked at Sonia and said, “Ms. Weiss is an internationally famous playwright. Her coming to Easton to find an actress for ‘Daughter of the Sea‘ is a good opportunity for you.”
“But…”
Caroline waved her hand. “I’m sure you know that Daphne isn’t suited to this role. She doesn’t have the experience of being in theater.
“Unless Ms. Weiss doesn’t care about this script, she wouldn’t be silly enough to let Daphne be the leading female.”
She continued, “I’ve also looked it up. You were in theater, and your life experiences are very
similar to this character’s.
“I believe acting will come naturally to you when you have the same emotional journey. Your only
issue is Sarcozian. How’s your aptitude in the language?”
“I can communicate if necessary …” Sonia was forced to go along with Caroline.
“That won’t do.” Since they were talking about work, Caroline immediately became stern and

“Good, then you better be off. Let me talk to your manager about the rest of it.”
“Alright, Caroline.”
Caroline watched as Sonia left excitedly. However, her own expression became twisted.
She had to admit that she wasn’t only helping Sonia get this role for the latter’s sake. She was doing this mostly for herself.
Daphne was Kirk’s woman, and Kirk was Eddy’s second uncle. Why could the Morrison family mess with everyone so thoroughly?
”
Was everyone expected to go along with it just because Daphne wanted the leading role of Daughter of the Sea“? What did the Morrisons think of the rest of the world? Were they just a bunch of nobodies?
No! Caroline wanted to show Eddy and Kirk that not everyone would lie down and be their playthings!
Caroline held on tightly to her sheets. Only then was she able to stop the way her whole body trembled.
Right then, on the opposite side of the planet, Avery was casually tasting some wine.
Beside her, Dolly shot her a look. “Avery, you seem to be in a good mood today.”
“Of course I am. You’ll be accompanying Marietta to Easton to audition for the lead female role. This is your first time working with a renowned playwright. I’m so happy for you.”
Avery swirled the wine in her glass. She looked at Dolly and smiled insincerely at her.
Dolly took a sip of wine. “It’s all thanks to you and your fervent support. Otherwise, I would never
have gotten the chance to work with Ms. Weiss.”

Chapter 495
During this time, Caroline had been using challenging tasks at work as an excuse to escape the reality of Kirk being Eddy’s second uncle.
Now that Cheryl had brought him up, it felt like a knife stabbing into her heart, making her bleed like a waterfall.
In an instant, she was overwhelmed, and she started sobbing.
Cheryl’s expression immediately changed. “Caroline, are you okay?”
Caroline huddled against the table, biting her lip. The papers on the desk fell to the floor because of how the table was shaking.
Cheryl was completely panicked and at a loss for what to do. She wanted to open the door and cry for help, but Caroline stopped her.
“Don’t open the door!” she shouted. She wanted to preserve some dignity.
“Caroline …” Cheryl’s eyes had turned red, too.
“What’s going on?”
“Come help me up,” Caroline said with difficulty.
Cheryl had no choice but to follow instructions. She went over and helped Caroline onto a chair. When she touched Caroline, she found Caroline was much colder than a normal person should be.
Once Caroline was sitting down, Cheryl said, her voice choked with sobs, “I–I’ll go get a doctor, okay?”
Caroline shook her head gently as she slowly leaned back into her seat. Once her spasms stopped, she said, “It’s nothing. Just get me some warm water.”
Still tearful, Cheryl nodded and went off to get the water.
After Caroline took a few sips, she finally regained some color.
Seeing Caroline this way, Cheryl had to speak carefully. She kept apologizing. “I’m sorry, Caroline.”
“It’s not your fault.” Caroline shook her head tiredly.

“Go out first. Let me calm myself down.”
Cheryl glanced at Caroline in worry. However, at Caroline’s insistence, Cheryl finally left the office.
But she didn’t dare to go too far. She remained in the waiting area outside Caroline’s office and did
her work there.
Inside the office, Caroline held one hand to her forehead and the other one pressed over her heart.
The pain hadn’t dissipated. The kind of pain that had assaulted her had nearly killed her.
It seemed that ignoring a problem wouldn’t make it go away. Instead, the pressure built up
consistently. When it finally exploded, the consequences were much more severe.
Caroline’s lips curved into a mocking smile.
When she had returned from Macovo, she should have gone ahead and divorced Kirk then and
there.
That way, she could have gotten everything over with immediately and wouldn’t be facing these
troubles either.
After trying a few times, Caroline finally managed to pick up her phone with trembling hands and
open her list of blocked numbers.
She expended a lot of effort to finally unblock Kirk’s number. Then, she sent him a text.
It read, “See you at City Hall at 9 am on Wednesday.”
After sending the message, she once again blocked Kirk’s number. She didn’t want to hear any
more excuses.
She felt like a complete fool. She should have divorced Kirk when she had found out that he had
another wife abroad.
What had been the point of dragging things out? Had she still been hopeful?
She had been hurt once before, so where had she found the strength or the confidence?
Gwen said that Caroline was a brave person, but in reality, she was st* pid. She never remembered
the lessons she had learned.
She had already been burned once with Eddy, but she had allowed herself to get hurt once again.
Worse, it had happened because of another member of the same family.

Chapter 496
In the president’s office of the SY Group’s Easton branch office, Kirk was staring at his phone with a dark gaze. He looked like he wanted to burn a hole through the device with his glare.
Standing opposite him, Charles felt like he was having an out–of–body experience. He was holding his breath and trying his best to be as unobtrusive as possible.
Suddenly, there was a loud bang as the phone was smashed to pieces on the ground.
Charles was frightened as he looked up at Kirk. Seeing Kirk’s expression, he felt his breath leave his body.
The Kirk before him now was like a wild beast. His eyes were terrifyingly red and shining with a monstrous light.
Charles swallowed and clenched his fists. Finally, he braced himself and said, “Sir, we’re really trying our best.
“Right now, we only found out that Dolly is… an actress with Oakes Theater. We also know that
she will be coming to Easton soon!”
“What good is that information? What good is it?” Kirk roared at Charles.
This was the first time Charles had ever seen Kirk lose his cool to such an extent.
“At least, no… If we find Dolly, maybe we’ll be able to find out who that mystery person is.”
Kirk held himself up with both hands on the desk. He glared grimly at Charles, silent.
Kirk was even more terrifying when he looked this way. Charles really wanted to find somewhere
to hide.
After a moment, the silence in the office was broken by Kirk’s chilling voice. “Get out!”
Charles quickly escaped from the office.

come.
It was Sean.
Sean was furious as he grabbed Kirk’s collar. “Kirk, look at yourself now.”
He dragged Kirk before the full–length mirror, showing Kirk just what he looked like now.
Kirk looked like someone had killed his dog. He looked like someone who had completely given
up on himself.
Sean stared at Kirk in the mirror and said ruthlessly. “Is this person in the mirror still you?
“In the past, you handled everything easily whenever you faced an impossible challenge. And
now? How did you become so weak?”
Sean was here because Charles had called him. Charles had found the situation too strange,
which was why he called for help once he had left Kirk’s office
Sean knew that something big had happened and had swiftly rushed over
When he had come in, he had found Kirk sprawled on the ground, looking as if his soul had been
sucked out of his body
Kirk wouldn’t respond, no matter how many times Sean called out Impulsively, Sean had
punched Kirk
At least the punch had managed to make Kirk regain some of his senses
Kirk wiped the blood from his face, but half his body was still slumped. “Then tell me what I
should do now Caroline wants to divorce me! What do I do?”
Sean was completely taken aback for a second. “Weren’t you two fine just a few days ago?”
Kirk grinned mockingly “If you don’t have any ideas, get the fuck out!” He pointed at the door as a
vein pulsed at his temple
Sean eyed the door. After trying to hold it in, he exploded He punched Kirk in the face again.

When he got hit, Kirk’s body swayed. However, he quickly found his footing by supporting himself against the couch. He glanced at Sean.

That was right. He was in pain, but wasn’t Caroline suffering too? Kirk couldn’t give up on himself now. What he had to do was quickly find out why she wanted to divorce him.
Kirk took several deep breaths and called an internal number. “Come to the office.”
Half a minute later, Charles walked in warily. Seeing Kirk’s swollen face and the blood under his
nose, he stared at Sean in fear.
“Find out why Caroline wants to divorce me.”
Kirk’s voice was terrifyingly low. He lifted his wrist to check the time before saying, “Two hours. I
want your report within two hours.”
Charles could only ask, “What?”
“I don’t care how you do it. Just find out the truth. I don’t care if you have to beg Caroline for the
answer.”
Charles glanced at Sean again.
Seeing that Kirk had finally calmed down, Sean let out a breath. His expression was no longer as
tense, and he had regained his usual nonchalance.
“What are you looking at me for? Shouldn’t you get going?”
Charles felt put on the spot. “Alright. I–I know what to do.”
Walking out of the office, Charles wanted to head to the roof. Kirk had only given him two hours.
How was he supposed to find out why Caroline wanted to divorce Kirk in such a short amount of
time?
But seeing how things were now, Charles knew his coming days would be hell if he didn’t find out
the truth.
Just as he walked to the elevator hesitantly, Sean’s voice came from behind. “Wait for me.”

Thinking of this, Charles started to smile
Caroline was discussing the next day’s audition with Sonia when she found out that Charles had

After Cheryl walked out, Sonia spoke up. “Caroline, do you need me to leave?”
After some thought, Caroline nodded. “Wait for me in the waiting room next door. I still have some
things to tell you. You’re not in a rush to leave, are you?”
“No, no. I’m free,” Sonia said with a smile.
“I’ve declined all gigs so that I can get this role.”
Caroline replied, “Helena must be lecturing you non–stop because of that.”
Sonia swallowed. She didn’t tell Caroline about just how angry Helena was about all this.
Helena was already incensed that she still wanted to compete for the lead role in “Daughter of the
Sea“.
After finding out that she had rejected all other gigs, Helena had been so mad that she had
scolded her for days on end.
Sonia knew that Helena only wanted what was best for her, though. She knew that Helena didn’t
want her to waste so much effort on a role that she would never get. But she still wanted to give it
a try.
Although she knew that the role would most likely be Daphne’s, this opportunity was hard to
come by. She would regret it if she didn’t even try.
“It’s fine. I’m already used to Helena nagging at me.”
After saying that, Sonia opened the door. “I’ll be off now, then.”
Caroline nodded. Once Sonia left, she took a deep breath and suppressed the shiver that was
beginning to spread through her body.

Caroline’s grip tightened on her glass. “Tell me, how do you plan on lying to me during your visit

“Madam, I think you must have misunderstood something.”
Without any proof, Charles could only keep denying Kirk’s identity. “How could I be the assistant

“Charles Lane!” Caroline let out a cold chuckle.
“Kirk’s wife abroad is Daphne Dawson, and Daphne is the wife of Eddy’s second uncle. Tell me,
what’s the relationship between Kirk and Eddy’s second uncle?”
Charles’s face turned ashen in a second. His mind buzzed with the revelation.
Caroline’s gaze was fixed on him. She had hoped more than anything that this was all not true.
But now, she could no longer allow herself such illusions. The truth was the truth. Her hope
wouldn’t change it.
“M–M–Madam …” Charles wanted to escape, but he had handled many situations before that

After saying that, Charles rushed to leave. He had to tell Kirk about this as soon as possible.
In the beginning, he had submitted documents to say that Kirk was already married so that Jude wouldn’t become suspicious. However, the documents never stated who Kirk’s wife was.
Caroline must have found out about this from that mystery person. Charles was sure about it.
se Charles left, the strength that had been holding Caroline together disappeared. She slumped

Cheryl tried again. “Caroline.”
“I’m fine. The audition for the role of the female lead in ‘Daughter of the Sea‘ is tomorrow. We don’t have much more time. Hurry and have Sonia come in.”
Although she was saying this to Cheryl, she meant it for herself. Caroline had to put all her focus into Sonia. She would help Sonia get the lead female role.
Caroline wanted to prove to the Morrison family, especially to Kirk, that not everyone would be their plaything. They couldn’t do whatever they pleased with them!
Helpless, Cheryl could only summon Sonia.
In the SY Group’s branch office, Charles was panting. He even forgot to knock before he barged into Kirk’s office.

Charles was at a loss for words. He thought that Kirk had missed the point.

Kirk had a vein bulging at his temple. Feeling worked up, he said, “Spit it out!”

Kirk suddenly let Charles go. “Investigate it immediately!”
“Yes, sir.” Charles turned to leave in a hurry.

With this proof, Charles immediately went to see Kirk. “Sir, look at this.”
When he saw the proof, Kirk immediately frowned. “Call Daphne.”
At this, Charles quickly piped up. “Sir, please calm down first. If you call Ms. Dawson now, Mr. Morrison Senior will find out about it and slowly discover your relationship with the madam.
“When the time comes, your identity will be exposed without a doubt if Mr. Morrison Senior tells the madam about it.”
Charles knew what Kirk wanted to do by calling Daphne.
Indeed, it was despicable that Daphne had gone against the terms of her contract and told Caroline about her position. Yet, any sudden move could cause even bigger problems.
Kirk massaged his pounding temples. He could only calm himself down by thinking of Caroline.
After he calmed down, his messy thoughts untangled, and he could think a bit more clearly.
Pinching the bridge of his nose, Kirk inhaled deeply before saying, “Go check what public events Caroline might attend in the coming days.”
This was easy. All Charles had to do was send a message.
Once he got a response, he said, “Sir, other than accompanying Ms. Norman for an audition tomorrow, the madam will spend all her time at the company. She has no events to attend.”
Kirk hummed lowly for a moment. Then, he said, “I got it. You can leave now.‘
Charles hesitated but said, “Okay, sir.”
After Charles left, Kirk stood up from his chair and walked to the floor–to–ceiling window. He looked at the stream of traffic below and felt uninterested in it for the first time ever.
Compared to standing on top of the world, Kirk would rather be by Caroline’s side.

His gaze darkened as he thought about things. If he wanted to go back to Caroline’s side, he would
have to calm himself and treat this the way he would when handling a difficult project at work.
Otherwise…
Although the logic was simple, Kirk found that he couldn’t see the situation as objectively as he
would have before.
Meanwhile, Caroline was the exact opposite. After being hurt in love, her thoughts became much
clearer. She was even more energetic as she worked.
After deciding on the time she and Sonia would set out tomorrow, Caroline looked at her watch. ‘
Go prepare yourself, then. Remember, you have to perform as I told you for that one scene.”
Sonia hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Alright.”
Earlier, Caroline had gotten her to stay because she wanted to tell Sonia where she thought the
script didn’t quite make sense. When she had taken the changed script, Sonia had been stunned
for a while.

A few days ago, when Caroline had said she found some parts of the script illogical, Sonia had
thought that Caroline was just saying it offhandedly.
She hadn’t expected that Caroline would insist on making changes to the parts she found
inappropriate, even after finding out that Marietta Weiss had written it.
After Caroline’s explanations, Sonia unconsciously began to feel that her edited version made
more sense. Plus, she had only realized this after a few minutes of thought.
However, Marietta was the one who had written this script. Surely, she wouldn’t like that
someone had changed it. Sonia couldn’t help but worry about what would happen tomorrow.
But the more she thought about it, the more she realized that she might not have gone to the audition if not for Caroline’s insistence and encouragement.
Besides, since she already knew that this role would most likely be Daphne’s, why did she need to
worry so much?
She would be passed over anyway. As such, she might as well act out the scene the way Caroline
had said.
