Kirk seemed quite tired. “It will only hide the truth for a while. He will grow suspicious sooner or
later and keep investigating.”
Sean sighed in response. “You should have just told Caroline the truth about who you are. There

Sean awkwardly scratched his head. “By the way, how do you plan on dealing with Daphne?”

The smoke from Kirk’s cigar drifted around Charles. “Have you contacted Marietta Weiss?”
Charles started to sweat. “Um… Sir, I haven’t managed to contact her. She seems to have changed
her number.”
Kirk’s eyes narrowed. “Then what about her address?”
“I also have not found it yet … But don’t worry, sir. I’ve already thought up an idea. Later, I’ll go see

Letting out a mouthful of smoke, Kirk took a few steps before turning back. He said pointedly,” You don’t need to get involved in this anymore.”
Charles was overjoyed as he caught up to Kirk. He buttered him up, saying, “Sir, you’re so
marvelous. You have a plan already. Could you tell me what it is?”
Kirk stared at Charles and asked, “Do you really want to know what my plan is?”
Charles bobbed his head up and down.
Kirk let out a laugh. “I’m going to use you as a sacrifice.”
The smile on Charles‘ face melted away. “What?”
But Kirk had already left, completely ignoring Charles, who had panic written on his face a ways

Caroline got out of bed early the next morning. No matter how careful she was, she still managed to wake Kirk.

However, Kirk had already gotten out of bed and changed. He walked before Caroline and hugged her waist. Then, he rubbed his face on her lips before being satisfied enough to let her go.
“Yes. Things have been really busy at work recently. Let’s go.”
Helpless, Caroline could only bring Kirk out with her. However, she insisted on driving rather than
let Kirk do it.
In the car, she asked, “Didn’t you say you wanted to quit before? With things so busy now, have
you thought about quitting again?”
“Are you thinking about giving Mackey Group to me?”
“Mackey Group is a broken up mess now thanks to their own people. There’s no use in acquiring it.

Soon, Caroline and Kirk went home loaded down with groceries. It was lucky that Kirk had been there. It meant that Caroline didn’t need to carry anything at all. Even her phone was in Kirk’s protection.
“I’m going to prepare the ingredients. You go back to sleep.”
“Alright.” Kirk nodded and went back to the bedroom.
Caroline assumed that he was too tired and didn’t think too much about it.
Once he went into the room, she started working.
Inside the bedroom, Kirk didn’t go back to sleep. He took out his phone and dialed Marietta’s number from memory.
Right then, Marietta was still asleep. When she heard her phone ringing, her first reaction was to get mad.
But then, she remembered that it might be Caroline calling and immediately became alert as she jumped out of the covers.
She found that an unfamiliar number was calling her.
Marietta’s displeasure at being woken up exploded.
“Who is this?”
“Me.” Kirk’s voice was very low and very recognizable.
“Matthew?”
Marietta was stunned to hear Kirk’s voice. Ever since hearing that Kirk had gone to break into the markets overseas, she and Kirk only contacted each other very rarely.

Marietta returned to her senses after watching Kirk walk into the kitchen.
She explained, “Oh, I couldn’t sleep, so I thought I would come over and see if there’s anything I can help with.
“After all, I can’t do anything else but sleep in the hotel.”
“Aunt Mary, you don’t have to be polite. Just make yourself at home here.”
“I can’t do that. We’re not relatives.” Marietta rolled her eyes.
She asked, “Carrie, do I treat you well?”

Caroline smiled. “Of course, you do. It’s not exaggeration to say that you treat me better than my
parents ever did.”
Sarah and Dan had only treated her well because she had been supposed to marry Eddy. However,

Caroline’s expression shifted at her words. She said, “Aunt Mary, I couldn’t.”
“Do you not like me?” Marietta was very hurt.
“Of course it’s not that.”
Caroline explained, “I’m clearly out of my league here. I wouldn’t dare dream of being your goddaughter.”
Caroline was telling the truth. Marietta was an internationally renowned playwright. Caroline already thought that she had been dreaming for being able to become friends with her.
But now, Marietta wanted to take her in as her goddaughter. This was a scenario she wouldn’t dare to imagine.
Marietta stroked Caroline’s head. She said dotingly, “I really mean it, Carrie. In fact, I wanted to tell you before…”
However, she had never been able to find a chance. This time, Kirk had given her an opportunity to do so.
She and Caroline had really hit it off instantly. When they had first met, Marietta had felt this connection with her. She kept having the feeling that she had seen Caroline somewhere.
“Although the private detective had found out that one of the big four families had adopted my
daughter, there’s no guarantee that I will be able to find her.”
At the mention of her daughter, Marietta felt her heart ache, and her tears unwittingly flowed
down her cheeks.
Caroline’s heart also ached at the sight, and she felt bad for her.
When Kirk walked out, he saw Caroline and Marietta crying together. His chest tightened at the
sight, and he quickly walked to Caroline with a plate in hand.
“Darling.”
Kirk’s voice brought Marietta and Caroline out of their sadness. The two women wiped the tears
from their faces.

“What happened?” Kirk looked at Marietta warily.
Marietta sniffled, “Oh, I was just telling Caroline that I want to adopt her as my goddaughter. Kirk,
do you agree with this?”
Marietta slightly smirked when she was done talking.
Kirk noticed the calculating glint in Marietta’s gaze and hesitated for a moment. Then, he nodded slightly.
Caroline couldn’t resist Marietta’s teasing and shouted, “All right, Mom!”
“Good!” Marietta was so happy that she handed Caroline a gift.
“I had prepared this gift a long time ago. Now that my wish has come true, this calls for a double
celebration!”
Marietta looked at Kirk meaningfully.
Of course, Kirk knew that the double celebration Marietta referred to was her taking Caroline as
her goddaughter and his marriage to Caroline.

Caroline paused, feeling Kirk staring at her. She brushed her hair from her forehead and asked, ” Did I say something wrong?”
“No.” Kirk glanced at Marietta, who was watching TV in the living room.
After a moment’s thought, he said, “I’m going out for a bit.”
“Okay.”
Caroline watched Kirk walked out of the kitchen toward Marietta.
The kitchen’s sound insulation was so good that she couldn’t hear what they were saying. So she simply shook her head with a smile and continued cooking.
In the living room, Kirk sat beside Marietta. “About your daughter…”
