Chapter 731
After clicking on it and scrolling down, Caroline saw her name written in big letters. There was even a bright red flower beside her name.
“It’s me! The bank chose me!” she exclaimed as she looked at Kirk with joyful eyes.
Perhaps she hadn’t had full faith in herself earlier. She was overwhelmed with happiness after learning that she was going to take over Collins Group.
Hugging her with one arm, Kirk took one of her hands and planted a kiss on it.
“Are you really so happy?” he asked.
“It’s just Collins Group.”
Caroline nudged him in the chest. “Hey, you’re getting ahead of yourself. Do you know what it
means to own Collins Group?”
“We can do whatever we please in the entertainment industry from now on,” she continued.
“No one would have the guts to offend us.”
Kirk laughed at her explanation. “I can give you SY Group if you like it.”
Caroline couldn’t contain her laughter as she glanced at Kirk. “As if.”
“I’m not lying,” Kirk told her, his eyes dead serious.
“Darling, if you want SY Group, I can give it to you.
“As if SY Group belongs to you.” Caroline stood up, escaping Kirk’s embrace.
When she unlocked her phone, she saw dozens of messages congratulating her on her victory.
She then clicked on the group chat, only to discover that Gwen had gone insane.
“Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! It’s true! Carol’s taken over Collins Group. Someone give me a good pinch and
tell me that it’s not a dream!”
Besides Gwen, Sonia and Cheryl were both overcome with excitement too.
Cheryl had even sent a voice message in the group chat and “accused” Caroline of keeping it a
secret from them, even though she knew that she would win from the beginning.

“Caroline, you knew you would win Collins Group way back, right? Why didn’t you tell us something so important?”
“Yeah!” After calming down, Gwen finally managed to recompose herself and said, “Carol, you’d better be trank and tell me who helped you kick the Morrisons‘ ass!”
“And the Hackett family’s too!”
After reading through the texts, Caroline pondered for a moment before replying, “It was SY Group’s CEO.”
Since everything was set in stone, there was no reason for her to keep it a secret anymore. She didn’t know how much of an impact her words had on the others in the group chat.
“What? SY Group’s CEO? Carol, you should have told us this before!”
“So that was why you were able to defeat both the Morrisons and the Hacketts at the same time! My goodness, Caroline, you’re so cool!” After sending the message, Cheryl added a kneeling emoji to show just how much she admired Caroline.
Sonia, on the other hand, took the easier approach and typed, “Boss, please be my sugar mommy.”
Once everyone had calmed down and the commotion had settled down, Gwen seized the chance
and asked, “Carol, did you two meet last time because of this?”
They had found it kind of strange that Eddy’s second uncle had wanted to meet Caroline all of a
sudden. So this was the reason.
After Caroline replied affirmatively, the group chat was filled with emojis and stickers of joy
again.
However, Gwen privately texted Caroline. “Does Kirk know this?”
“Yep, he does,” Caroline replied.
“He played a part in making SY Group’s CEO help me with this.”
Gwen pressed a hand against her forehead when she read Caroline’s reply. “Does Kirk know what
he’s doing?” Gwen thought to herself.
Although Kirk was more good–looking than Eddy’s second uncle, the latter was better than him in
terms of wealth and other aspects. Needless to say, Eddy’s second uncle posed a big threat to Kirk.

A soft smile hung on Caroline’s lips. She knew fairly well what Gwen was trying to say.
“I asked Eddy’s second uncle about it that day,” Caroline said, speaking into the phone with her back against the railing.
She turned to look at Kirk. She wasn’t sure what he was doing, but she could see that his brows were furrowed slightly. Under the soft light, he seemed less stern and more approachable than before.
“He said he supported me only because I have a knack for business,” replied Caroline.
“You’re too naive. There are lots of others who have a knack for business, too. How come you were the one to catch his eye? You’d better watch out. Especially since he’s helped you this time.”
Gwen continued, “He’s a part of Collins Group now, and you’ll have to keep an eye out in case he
talks about it.”
Caroline fell silent as she considered Gwen’s words. “Don’t worry about me, Gwen. I know what I’m
doing.”
“I don’t have to worry about you,” Gwen told her.
“I know you like the back of my hand. It’s that guy I’m wary of. I’m afraid …”
Caroline smiled and said, “I’m a married woman now. Even if he truly has feelings for me, he can’t
just do anything as he wishes, right?”
Gwen giggled. “Nothing is certain. Just be careful. I don’t believe that a man would be kind to a
woman for no reason at all. He must have a hidden agenda.”
“I understand.” Caroline nodded in understanding.
“Okay then. I’m hanging up.”
Caroline heard the splashing of water from the other end of the line and could somewhat guess
what was going on on Gwen’s side. Smiling, she said, “Alright. Goodnight.”
After their call ended, Caroline raised her eyes to look at Kirk, who seemed to be especially busy
with whatever he was doing. The frown was still stuck on his face.

Time passed like the ebbing of the tide at night.
Silence filled the air in the private room at Gourmet Manor after the bank made the
announcement. Not a single person spoke. None of them had expected Caroline to emerge victorious.
Suddenly, the bottle of red wine in Layla’s hands cracked, and she let it fall to the ground. The sound of it shattering snapped everyone out of their daze.
The people around Layla wore different expressions as they stared at her now.
“No way! That’s impossible!” She smashed anything and everything around her as if she had gone insane.
She abruptly stood up, grabbed someone by the arm, and snapped, “Tell me that everything I saw just now wasn’t real! Tell me that it’s all fake!”
She shook the person repeatedly with so much force that he almost puked from how nauseous it made him feel. He couldn’t utter a single word anymore.
The people surrounding Layla were so horrified that they staggered backward in horror.
“Tell me!” Layla screamed in his face, her voice piercing the air in the room like a sharp and terrifying blade.
A moment later, the person whose arm she was grabbing couldn’t take it anymore. He patted her arm and said, “Ms. Layla, snap out of it. It’s just Collins Group. The Morrisons would still support
you.”
“Maybe the bank made a mistake,” he added.
“You should give them a call and ask them about it.”

Unfortunately, no one answered the call. In haste, Layla remembered that someone must be
working at the bank right now, so she quickly called the bank.
Her call was answered almost immediately. “Where’s Mr. Donovan? Pass him the phone right now!
How could something like this happen? The man must have a death wish.
The staff member on the other end of the line sounded confused. “Mr. Donovan? Nobody here goes
by that name.”
“What?” Layla roared into the phone.
“Does he think he can hide for all eternity? Tell him that I’ll fire him if he doesn’t answer my call!”
The staff member was flabbergasted. Still, he replied, “Miss, there’s no ‘Mr. Donovan‘ here.”
“Oh right.” He seemed to remember something.
“The former chairman’s surname is Donovan, but he’s been sacked. Just call his number if you
have any other questions.”
With that said, the staff member hung up, leaving Layla staring blankly into space.
A while later, a thought occurred to her, and she picked up her phone to call Eddy.
When the call went through, she seemed to have forgotten where she was and who she was
surrounded by.
Weeping, she said, “Eddy, didn’t you say that you would hand Collins Group over to me? How come
it’s in Caroline’s hands now?
“She caused your grandpa’s death, yet nobody punished her for it.” Layla continued.
“And now she’s taken over Collins Group. How is this fair? This isn’t fair! This isn’t fair at all!”
“Eddy,” she pleaded.
“You’ve got to help me and take revenge for me!”
However, Layla wasn’t aware of the fact that Eddy hadn’t listened to a single word that she had

The only thing on his mind right now was the bank’s announcement. Just a few days ago, a mysterious person had appeared out of nowhere and purchased the entire bank.
Eddy had a hunch that said person was his second uncle.
To test his hypothesis, he had agreed to sell the bank off. Now, the bank had made its announcement, proving that he was right.
All of his guesses were correct! Caroline’s husband was his second uncle. It was true! All of it was true!
Eddy’s hands balled into fists. He couldn’t make himself believe that his second uncle–the person he once admired the most–was married to Caroline.
How had this happened? How could Kirk marry Caroline?
Even if Eddy himself disliked her, Kirk shouldn’t have married her. What was more-
“Eddy!” Layla’s piercing voice came from the other end of the line, pulling him out of his thoughts.
“Are you even listening? I don’t care who decided to hand Collins Group over to Caroline. You have
to fire the person behind this!”
“What if I say that the one you’re talking about is me?” Eddy spat, his expression icy.
Layla froze. She couldn’t believe it.
“No way. You told me that you would help me become the Collins Group’s new owner,” she
muttered.
“You wouldn’t do something like that to me, right?”
“I said that I would help you, but I never promised to make you that company’s owner,” Eddy
replied as he stared right ahead,
“Layla, you saved my life once, and I’ve helped you over and over again because of that.
“This is the final time I’m helping you. You have to depend on yourself from now on.”
“No!” Layla screeched.
“How could you do this to me? How could you be so cruel?

“Eddy, you can’t treat me like this! You can’t… Even if you have no feelings for me, I’m still your
savior. You wouldn’t have lived to this day without me. You can’t treat me like this.”
Eddy hung up, his face expressionless. Indeed, Layla had saved him once back then, but he had
repaid her kindness a lot of times too.
He didn’t want this to carry on anymore. It was fine if she wanted him to give her money or help
her search for a suitor. He couldn’t care less about her anymore.
Right now, all he wanted to do was be together with Caroline. He had finally realized just how
much he loved her. He loved her so, so, so much.
He couldn’t lose her. He had to take her out of Kirk’s grasp.
Meanwhile, Layla collapsed onto the ground after suffering multiple blows from the truth bombs
Eddy had said.
Seeing her reaction, everyone around her knew that the matter regarding Collins Group was now
set in stone. There was nothing she could do to change it, so they left her alone in the room.
All of a sudden, an eerie smile spread across Layla’s face. She sneered, “Caroline, do you think you
can defeat me just like this? Don’t forget that you were never part of the Evans family to begin
with! You’re not one of the Evans! You never were!”
Layla’s desperate cries reverberated in the empty room. Nobody replied to her. She was all alone
now.
After the bank made the announcement, Caroline had to attend a simple ceremony in person. She
asked Kirk, “Do you want to come along with me?”
The ceremony would be bustling with people, and there would be plenty of media coverage too.
Caroline wanted to introduce Kirk to the world and let everyone know that he wasn’t a good–for-
nothing husband.
Even though he wasn’t wealthy, he had a knack for business. He would surely succeed if given the
chance to start a business himself.
Besides, she wanted everyone to know that he loved her a lot and that they were happy. It would

She couldn’t care less about what others said about her, but she just couldn’t stand it when they insulted Kirk by saying that he was useless and that she was the one supporting him.
Despite her efforts to reason with those people, they were always adamant and wouldn’t change their minds.
Therefore, Caroline thought it best to let everyone know just what a wonderful person Kirk was on the day of the handover ceremony.
Noticing the look of eagerness in Caroline’s eyes, Kirk couldn’t find it in himself to disappoint her. Still, he had to let her down this time.
If he were to appear in public, his identity would definitely be revealed. If that happened, Caroline would learn about his true identity and that he had kept her in the dark about it all this time.
She wouldn’t forgive him then.
Another thing was that Eddy still had his eyes on Caroline and was keenly waiting for Kirk to slip up. So Kirk had to be extra careful this time.
“Sorry, darling, but I’m not used to public events like this,” said Kirk apologetically.
“I’m afraid I’ll drag you down and embarrass you by making a fool of myself.”
“I’ll panic if I go on the stage alone.” Caroline wouldn’t give in.
“Can you please accompany me?”

Kirk couldn’t resist it when he saw Caroline pout. Still, he managed to hold himself back with his last ounce oí rationality.
“I can’t accompany you there, darling,” he told her.
“I have something important to attend to on that same day.”
“What’s so important? What’s more important than me?” Caroline turned away from him so that her back faced him, her lower lip protruding as she sulked.
She had hoped against hope that she could introduce him to everyone during the handover ceremony. Alas, Kirk just wouldn’t give in. She was so mad at him for it.
Then, Kirk put an arm around her waist and nuzzled her neck. In his low and raspy voice, he muttered, “Naturally, everything about you is most important to me.”
“But I hope that the ceremony will go perfectly. I don’t want to ruin it and make you regret anything later on,” he added.
“You not attending it will be my greatest regret!” Caroline was fuming already.
Kirk stared at her and found himself at a loss for words.
Noticing this, Caroline murmured, “Sorry. I was being too harsh on you. I didn’t mean it. I just hope that you can show up on such a significant day for me.”
She continued, “Besides, I want the world to know you. I want them to know just how wonderful of a person you are. You aren’t anything like what they say!”
Kirk lowered his eyes to look at her. “What did they say?”
It was Caroline’s turn to fall silent. Those people’s comments were much too horrible. She didn’t want to tell Kirk about it at all.
“Tell me about it.” Kirk carried her, sat down, and made her sit on his lap.
“Tell me.”
“Nope.” Caroline buried her face in his chest and pretended as if she didn’t know a single thing
about what she had just said.

After the deed was done, Caroline trembled slightly. Noticing this, Kirk pulled her into his arms and patted the back of her head as though he were coaxing a child. “Sleep… Time to sleep
Moments later, he heard the sound of her even breathing. Looking down, he saw that she had indeed fallen asleep, and he breathed a sigh of relief.
Finally, the matter of attending the handover ceremony had been dealt with. He picked up his phone and scanned his call history.
Three days had passed since the bank had made the announcement. Yet Eddy still hadn’t contacted him. How strange.
Kirk had already suspected that something was off back then. Later, Eddy had even made a show of having Layla’s back. Since then, Kirk had suspected that Eddy had guessed that he was Caroline’s husband.
Since things had come to this, there was no need for Kirk to continue keeping his identity a secret
anymore.
But-
Although he didn’t want to keep it a secret from Eddy, he would surely make the latter suffer if Caroline found out about it,
After considering his options for a moment, he sent Eddy a message.
“Let’s meet up.”
It didn’t take long for Eddy to reply. “I’ve been waiting for your message.”
“You can decide when and where we’re meeting.”
Chapter 736
Kirk didn’t wait for a reply after sending the message. He simply looked down at Caroline in his
aims.
Her brows were furrowed tightly, which made him wonder what she was dreaming about. “No, it
isn’t me. I didn’t…” she murmured.
This wasn’t the first time Kirk had seen her frown and mutter in her sleep. His heart broke a little
every time this happened.
Despite what he felt, he could only hug her tight to give her some warmth. It was a good thing
that Michael had prescribed her some medicine. Otherwise, she would have nightmares every
other day. Now, she didn’t wake up from fright like before.
Soon, she fell into a deep slumber once again. Now that Caroline was sleeping just fine, Kirk could
finally close his eyes and fall asleep himself.
Early the next morning, he saw Eddy’s reply. “The Gruidae. See you at 9:00 pm.”
Eddy had sent the message last night. Kirk narrowed his eyes at the screen and was about to put
his phone down when he noticed Caroline getting up from the bed.
“You’re awake,” he said.
She nodded and got up from the bed with a hand on her forehead. “How did I fall asleep?”
She could vaguely remember that they were discussing something important last night. Soon
after that, she had fallen asleep in a daze.
What had they been talking about? She patted herself on the head but couldn’t find an answer.
“What are you doing?” Kirk stopped her from hitting herself on the head.
“Are you trying to make yourself dumb?”
“No. I was going to tell you something important last night,” she said.
“But I can’t remember what it was. Do you think there’s something wrong with my brain?”
Kirk chuckled. “If there’s something wrong with your brain, other people wouldn’t have brains in
their skulls.”

She said, “It’s your fault for making me stupid.”
Kirk couldn’t contain his laughter. He ruffled her hair and said, “Yeah, yeah. It’s all my fault!”
As he spoke, he glanced at his phone on the table. “I’m having dinner outside tonight, so you don’t
have to wait for me to come back home.”
“Okay,” said Caroline as she got up from the bed and headed for the bathroom.
“Are you going to have dinner with Sean?”
Kirk stared silently at the back of her figure for a while before answering, “Yes.”
Caroline didn’t doubt him and simply closed the door to the bathroom.
After she shut the door, Kirk stared back down at his phone, his face darkening considerably.
Eddy had arrived at The Gruidae earlier and had been waiting for quite some time already.
The restaurant wasn’t called “The Gruidae” because there were cranes inside. Instead, it was
named so because of the bronze statue of a crane in the center of the restaurant.
The statue had been passed down for generations by a clan of craftsmen since the era of King Altair. Eddy stared at the statue downstairs as he fidgeted with the glass of wine in one hand.
“Is he not here yet?” he asked.
This restaurant was one of the Morrisons‘ many properties. Eddy had purposely asked the staff to close the restaurant so he could meet Kirk here today.
Time passed, and soon, it was 9:15 pm. Eddy narrowed his eyes at the clock on the wall. He had just gotten up from his seat when he heard footsteps coming from outside.
His gaze landed on the entrance of the restaurant. The doors opened, and in walked the person he
was all too familiar with. It was Kirk, his second uncle.

After taking a seat, Eddy suddenly thought of something and wanted to stand up once more. However, the thought struck him as childish, so he swallowed his frustration and sat in his seat.
He only spoke after he had calmed down. “Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you keep it a secret? Did Grandpa know this long ago …”
The longer Eddy spoke, the less inclined he was to carry on talking. In the end, he simply glowered at Kirk and said, “You’re my uncle! How could you do this to me?”
To Eddy, Kirk was like the sun in the sky that had guided him all along. He never thought that the
rays from the sun would one day scald him and burn him alive.
Kirk simply stared back into Eddy’s eyes. Slowly and elegantly, he took out a cigar and lit it up.
“Getting married is personal. Why should I inform you about it?”
“But you married Caroline! She was my fiancée! How could you?” Eddy could say nothing more. He
felt as though Kirk had betrayed him.
“As far as I know, my wife and I were single when we got married.”
Eddy shot up from his seat. “Uncle Kirk, I know that I’ve wronged her. I ignored her feelings and
suggested such a ridiculous idea.
“But it was only because I didn’t realize that I had been in love with her since the beginning.”
He continued, “Layla had saved my life once, and it had weighed on my heart. I couldn’t just leave
her alone that time.”
“Did you think that gave you the right to hurt Caroline?” Kirk exhaled, and the smoke swirled in
the air, forming a misty veil that amplified the scorn in his eyes.
Eddy looked as if someone had just punched him in the gut. He collapsed onto the chair. “It’s all
my fault,” he muttered.

The wounds Kirk had suffered in his heart back then still stung. He wasn’t sure what would
happen in the future, but there were certain things he had to make clear.
When it came to Caroline, both Kirk and Eddy had been equally deceitful in the tricks they had
used.
A while later, Kirk broke the silence. “Do you know why I can’t reveal my identity to her?”
“Why?” asked Eddy, his heart leaping into his throat.
“You Morrisons had better reflect on yourselves,” said Kirk.
“Your grandfather insisted on letting her marry you under the guise of doing it for her own good.
While you … What did you do when she gave you unconditional love back then?”
Eddy could tell that Kirk was forcing those words out through gritted teeth.
Kirk continued, “How did you treat her? It didn’t matter whether you Morrisons treated her kindly
or not. Everything you people do is for your own good.”
He snapped, “Have you ever asked her what kind of life she wants to lead?”

This time, Kirk’s words stunned Eddy to the very core.
“We-”
“There’s no ‘we‘ here,” Kirk scoffed, his voice harsh. He spoke as if he were a higher being who
looked down on the foolishness of mankind.
“You reaped what you sowed and made Caroline hate the Morrison family. And now I’m the one
who has to bear the consequences of your actions!”
Kirk’s hands balled into fists, and the corners of his lips turned up slightly in a sneer. “Do you really think you have the right to question my decision about hiding the truth from her?”
His dark eyes stared right into Eddy’s, making the latter feel as though he were enveloped by
darkness. The feeling of dread made him feel suffocated, and he subconsciously trembled at
Kirk’s gaze.
A while later, Kirk said, “I know that I’m at fault here. That’s why I’m trying to make amends now.”
“Uncle Kirk, please divorce Caroline,” Eddy pleaded.
“Give me a chance, will you?”
Shooting up from his seat, Kirk kicked Eddy in the chest. Eddy was caught by surprise as the hit
sent him sprawling onto the ground along with his chair.
His wound, which hadn’t fully healed yet, tore open, and blood seeped out of it. The crimson blood
bloomed like a flower on his white shirt.
Despite that, Kirk didn’t seem to mind. He simply said, “I’ve cut all ties with your family since you
people tried to force Caroline to marry you after Jude’s death.
“You aren’t family to me now, Eddy. You’re just a man who wants to take my woman away from
- me. And I won’t go easy on people like you.”
Kirk added, “I advise you to stop thinking about getting your hands on Caroline if you want to
spare your family the pain of going bankrupt.
“Otherwise, I’ll do everything in my power to make you fall so deep into the abyss that you’ll never

Kirk had just reached the elevator when he heard that and turned to face Eddy. “Try me,” he

The look on Kirk’s face sent a shiver down Eddy’s spine. When Eddy snapped out of it, he realized
that Kirk was long gone.
Kirk’s foul mood changed for the better once he entered the elevator.
Charles couldn’t help but wonder aloud, “Sir, will Eddy really tell the madam your true identity? If
he does, she won’t be able to handle the news.”
Kirk massaged his temple upon hearing the question. A vein pulsed on his forehead, a signal of
how annoyed he was right now.
“Can’t you find a way to stop him if he truly intends to do that?”
“Oh, okay,” said Charles. He understood the job immediately.
“How has she been lately?”
“Jack said that she’s okay when she’s at the company, but …” Charles‘ voice trailed off as he
hesitated.
“Her assistant said that she would sometimes look upset as if she were in immense pain.”
Kirk’s gaze darkened ever so slightly. He regretted not giving Eddy another good kick.
“Let’s go to Michael’s,” said Kirk curtly.

When they reached the ground floor, Charles opened the car’s backseat door for Kirk and got into

Michael had long gotten used to Kirk’s behavior. As an expert psychologist, and based on his observations lately, he found that Caroline was the only person who could affect Kirk’s mood.
After listening to Kirk explain Caroline’s condition, Michael pulled out a chair and gestured for
him to sit
“I conducted a meeting with several other psychologists after hypnotizing her last time,” said Michael.
“We agreed that the best solution for her for now is to undergo hypnotherapy.
He continued, “If we hypnotize her for the second time, some things may go out of hand. It’s because the person who hypnotized her back then employed a rather peculiar method during the
process.
“That’s why she can’t remember anything about her past at all. But we don’t know the method
that they used.”
Frustrated, Kirk asked, “What do you plan to do?”
“We have two ways to solve this. The first one is to use electroshock therapy. The strong stimulation can make her forget Mr. Morrison Senior’s death,” Michael suggested.
on’t know what method was used to
“Another option would be hypnotization. But since we
hypnotize her back then, we can’t guarantee what will happen after she gets hypnotized a second
time.”
“What’s the worst–case scenario?”
“The worst thing that could happen
Michale pondered the question briefly before answering, “Well, it could wipe out all of her
memories.”
Kirk’s face darkened considerably. “And that includes me?”
Michael could somehow hear a bit of a tremble in Kirk’s voice, but the facts couldn’t be changed. With great difficulty, he nodded and said, “Yes. Everything.”
Kirk blinked and fell silent for a long time before asking, “Is there any other way to settle this?”

“Perhaps one day she will think things through and let go of the guilt and remorse she feels. This
sort of thing isn’t unheard of in psychology. Human psychology is highly complex, after all.
“I can’t guarantee what would happen, although people say that I’m at the pinnacle of this

“I only have one question now,” Kirk interrupted him.
“How likely is your idea of waiting for her to think things through?”
“Based on the thousands of cases I’ve taken, only a few succeeded in doing so. I would say one out
of one thousand patients had done it before,” Michael replied with a wry smile.
Kirk waited no more. He simply turned and left the room.
“Kirk,” a worried Michael called out, but Kirk was already at the entrance with the door ajar.
The look on Kirk’s face when he turned back to look at Michael was so foreboding that the latter’s
footsteps faltered.
“I’ll consider the three options you proposed.” That said, Kirk closed the door with a bang.
The corners of Michael’s mouth twitched at that. He was sure that Kirk would have strangled him
to death after he had proposed the two methods if it hadn’t been for the fact that he was Caroline’s
final hope.
Caroline was so occupied with preparing to integrate Collins Group and Evans Group that she had
no spare time to continue her scriptwriting.
She only realized that she hadn’t contacted Rosalind in a long time when Quentin called her.
“Do you have news regarding the two tasks I gave you?” asked Caroline as she stretched and
headed for the balcony to relax.

“Yep, but there isn’t much progress,” Quentin replied.
“I might disappoint you.”
“It’s been 25 years or so since then. I would be surprised if you could find out anything about it,”
said Caroline.
“Tell me what you discovered.”

Quentin broke into a smile and said, Tll tell you about Yvonne first, then.”
He continued. “I found out that she had indeed been adopted from an orphanage.
“But she was taken away from the orphanage in just a couple of months. It doesn’t match up with
what you told me about Ms. Weiss‘ daughter.”
“Is it possible that she joined the Hacketts only when she turned five or six years old?” Caroline
asked, even though she felt that the possibility wasn’t that high.
That’s possible,” Quentin said.
“I’ve looked into it. After she was taken away from the orphanage, the Hacketts‘ nanny took her to
the countryside.
“The Hackett couple only visited her occasionally, and she went to live with them when she was
around five or six years old.”
Caroline had never expected her assumption to hit the bull’s eye. “But I still think that this all
sounds ridiculous. Even if they had seldom met, they shouldn’t have mistaken their daughter for
another five–year–old.”
“We’re on the same page,” Quentin agreed.
“That was why I had someone look into this. But since it happened long ago, we need a lot of time
to get any clues on this.“.
Caroline lowered her eyes. “It’s fine as long as we get to the end of it.”
She wanted to clear things up because this was related to Marietta.
“No problem,” came Quentin’s voice from the other end of the line.
“Also, about your case I’ve looked into it too.”
He said, “You’ve been to a mental health clinic overseas when you were five or six years old. The
psychologists there specialize in wiping out people’s memories.”
“Wiping out memories?”
“Yep. They hypnotize people to erase their memories. I’m not sure how it’s done, though, but the

Caroline muttered, “So that’s why I can’t remember anything that happened before I was five
years old ”
“Huh? What were you saying?” Quentin hadn’t heard her clearly.
“It’s nothing,” said Caroline, dismissing his question.
“Did you find out why Sarah had taken me there?”
TET
“Yep. I went through the case files. Based on the psychologist’s report, you had PTSD after getting kidnapped when you were young, so she took you there to get rid of those memories.”
“Did you discover anything else?”
“Nope. That’s the only evidence that I’ve managed to recover.”
Caroline nodded in understanding. “Okay. Got it.”
“I’m hanging up then.”
“Okay.” Caroline nodded. The call ended, but she continued to grip her phone.
So Sarah had taken her to see a doctor just to wipe out the memories of her getting kidnapped?
She furrowed her brows in deep thought. Just then, she heard the sound of someone turning the
doorknob. It must be Kirk.
She rushed to the door, only to see Kirk in a gloomy mood. Although he smiled adoringly at her
when he saw her, she could sense that he was in a bad mood.
“What’s wrong?” She approached him and put her arms around his neck.
He lowered his eyes to look into her mesmerizing ones and found himself thinking of the three
options that Michael had told him of.
He swallowed and pulled her into a tight hug. With their hearts beating next to each other, it was
as if they were one.
