After Caroline left, the crowd dispersed.
Betty didn’t feel like playing poker anymore. So she dragged Marietta out to the garden to bask in the sun.
“It feels so nice to be in the sun, especially at this time. It’s so warm,” Betty commented while squinting to
see the sun.
After a moment, she turned to Marietta, asking, “Do you know what’s on my mind right now?”
Marietta quietly stared at her, waiting for her to continue. As expected, in the next second, Betty said, “I’m
thinking about Carrie.”
She added, “She always reminds me of the sun’s comforting warmth. She has a way of bringing a sense of
comfort to people.”
“You’re right. Speaking of which…” Marietta replied while squinting. She seemed to have recalled a
beautiful memory as a faint smile formed on her face.
“For a while, I wished Carrie was my child. Unfortunately, that’s just not our destiny.”
Betty, who was sitting on the recliner, immediately sat up. She glanced around. After seeing no one else
was around, she asked seriously, “Marietta, do you consider us friends?”
At the sight of her solemn expression, Marietta knew Betty was finally getting to the main point. She sat
up as well before replying, “Of course, we’re friends.”
In fact, it was because of Kirk that Marietta and Betty had become friends. Back then, Marietta and Kirk
had signed the copyright for a book.
After that, she had had to join the promotional activities during the movie premiere. That had been her
first time visiting Macldo.
Kirk had been worried that she might have a hard time adapting. Hence, he had asked Betty to
accompany her. Betty and Marietta had been friends since then.
“Okay, since you see me as a friend, there are some things I need to get off my chest.”
Betty didn’t hold back and said straightforwardly, “You saw what happened today as well. Your daughter
is very hostile toward Carrie.
“I have no idea why she is acting like that, but I heard Carrie played a vital role in reuniting you two. So
somehow, Carrie is her benefactor.

“Even if Yvonne has issues with her, she shouldn’t treat Carrie like that. Yvonne’s behavior will hurt
Carrie’s feelings.”
Betty had chosen her words carefully. Nevertheless, Marietta wasn’t a fool. She quickly caught on to the
underlying message.
Yvonne was returning kindness with hostility. Thus, Betty was suggesting that there were issues with
Yvonne’s character.
Marietta was aware of it, too. Not too long ago, she had locked herself away for days, engrossed in her
creative work.
But she had continued to have her meals with Yvonne every day. The latter had exceptionally high
expectations for food.
She would insist on the finest meals. Moreover, she would ask for food she had never tried before. To
make matters worse, she hired top chefs to prepare them.
During meal times, she would only talk about how much money she spent that day. Yvonne had even
asked Marietta whether she could get more money.
Although Marietta was a well-known figure, she was just one person, doing the work all on her own. She
couldn’t compete with the wealthy families like the Morrisons and the Yateses.
Yvonne’s reckless spending was depleting Marietta’s savings rapidly. The latter had subtly mentioned this
to Yvonne.
Marietta had expected Yvonne to empathize with her. However, to her surprise, Yvonne had burst into
tears after hearing that.
She had even started to detail the hardships she endured while living with the Hacketts. In the end, it had
made Marietta feel more guilty.
After listening to what she said, Betty remarked angrily, “She’s taking advantage of this. That’s why she’s
behaving recklessly!”
“But what she said isn’t wrong. If it hadn’t been for my negligence, she wouldn’t have gone through so
much,” Marietta responded.
Upon hearing her words, Betty took her hand, saying, “Marietta, I’m a mother too. I understand the pain a
mother goes through when they lose a child better than anyone.
“If she truly cared for you, she wouldn’t repeatedly hurt you. Look at yourself now. There’s no trace of the
