Chapter 14
Quinnie looked annoyed when she spotted Lia.
“You still dare to show your face here? I thought you’d already spread your wings when you rejected all my calls!”
“You brought us so much trouble and even sullied Ralph’s reputation. Now, he’s facing contention because of you! Have you no shame?”
The moment Quinnie spoke, nobody else dared to make a sound. They were all looking forward to the drama unfolding.
Lia pursed her lips and smiled.
“It was Grandma who invited me. I’ll be leaving after I greet her,” Lia responded and headed up to Sophia’s room.
Quinnie stood up in rage. She felt angry for having been ignored. After all, she was used to berating Lia all the time in public.
“Stop right there! I’m your mother–in–law but you won’t even greet me? Have your manners gone down the drain?”
“This is why I’ve always said that a marriage should be between people of equal social standing. Our Walters family is too unlucky to have met an ill–bred daughter–in–law like you!”
Lia turned to look at Quinnie frostily. She did not offer a timid apology to appease Quinnie in front of the crowd.
Lia looked at Quinnie calmly and smiled. Then, she said, “I think I’m the one who was unlucky!”
Quinnie’s face fell. She could not believe that the meek and docile Lia would retort her with an attitude.
“You…” Quinnie started.
“Even an illegitimate son could be accepted into the Walters family. So, it won’t be long before Amber is accepted as well. That said, your future daughter–in–law is of an even lower social standing than I am. To hell with your equal social standing crap!”
It was common knowledge that Amber’s mother was an escort at a bar. She had seduced a rich businessman and secretly gave birth to Amber.
However, the rich businessman died without knowledge of Amber’s existence. Thus, there was nobody for her to turn to.
In the end, Amber’s mother kicked up a fuss in front of the rich businessman’s house. She had wanted the rich businessman’s wife to support both her and Amber.
The scandal created a huge uproar back then, and everyone knew about it. It could be easily verified

with a simple search.
That was the initial reason for Quinnie’s objection to Ralph and Amber’s relationship, Her background was truly unacceptable.
Quinnie’s expression turned exceedingly sour when she heard that. The grandson she held in her arms instantly lost his charm.
Watching the scene played out in front of her, Ralph’s aunt rushed over to diffuse the situation.

“Lia, there’s no need for everyone to know every little thing. With you here, why would we let another woman into the family? Hurry and beg Quinnie to forgive you.”
“The child will be referring to you as his mother in the future. You must learn to be magnanimous!”
The crowd chimed in agreement.
“Yeah, you should be more open–minded! The child is innocent.”
“Don’t be hung up on this. You’re already Mrs. Walters. It’s common for men to have a few mistresses
outside.”
Quinnie looked at Lia icily and let out a chilling laugh. Her words became even harsher than before.
“You should thank your ancestors for even just being able to marry into our family. It’s such a joke
that
you don’t even know your place.”
“So what if you need to accept an illegitimate child? It’s your fault for not being able to bear a child. Even if Ralph had ten or eight mistresses outside, you can only blame it on your infertility!”
Quinnie continued her grating tirade. “Why don’t you take a good look at yourself. If you weren’t married into our family, would you be able to wear branded clothes or carry a bag like that? Wasn’t it my son who bought that for you? We’ve been too kind to you. You’d better wish we won’t kick you out to live your life in poverty!”
“What are you going on about, Mom?” A deep and authoritative voice boomed out.
Ralph had heard Quinnie’s words as he entered, and he became extremely upset.
Not accounting for the crowd present, anyone would’ve been uncomfortable listening to Quinnie.
Not to mention, Lia had been his wife.
Ralph looked toward her subconsciously.
He knew his mother very well. She was someone who would always look down on women with a sub- par background. Given that, he surmised that she humiliated Lia on a regular basis.
